Welcome to the Official Site of the Clan Strachan Comhairle Mor (Great Council)

The primary purpose of this Great Council is to preserve the heritage, heraldry, customs, nobility and tradition of Clan Strachan; and in so doing to coordinate efforts to having a recognized Clan Chief of Clan Strachan.

The Council is attempting to identify descendants (male or female) who have a blood line to our past Chief, the now deceased Admiral Sir Richard J Strachan, RN (Bart.); or a Representer of a cadet line (for example, the Strachans of Inchtuthil, Glenkindie, Lenturk, Monboddo, etc.). This individual must be able to prove their lineage claim to the satisfaction of the Court of the Lord Lyon in order to obtain the noble dignity of Chief of Clan Strachan.

Concurrent with efforts to find a genealogical descendant who can be proved, the Council will be attempting to identify individuals bearing the STRACHAN surname (or a derivative spelling) who qualify for Derbhfine (Family Convention) membership in accordance with heraldic law under the jurisdiction of the Court of the Lord Lyon, and in accordance with our Constitution. That is, individuals bearing the surname of STRACHAN who are:

i. Scottish land owners (Ref. Constitution, section II[2]); or

ii. Armigers with letters patent from the Court of the Lord Lyon. Edinburgh, Scotland. (Ref. Constitution, section II[1])

iii. Descendants of Scottish Armigers who are eligible to matriculate their ancestor's Arms.

iv. Leading members of the Family STRACHAN, who on the basis of their representations are acceptable to the appointed Officer of Arms, Court of the Lord Lyon.

If a blood line tie to the past Chief of Clan Strachan, or a cadet branch cannot be found, a Family Convention (Derbhfine) will eventually be convened in Edinburgh, Scotland among the Clan Strachan Great Council Derbhfine Members in order to nominate a Commander of Clan Strachan. Said Commander would likely serve for 10 years, in order to allow competing claims for the Chiefship of Clan Strachan to arise. Thereafter, assuming no legitimate competing claims are brought forward, the Commander would likely merge as Chief of Clan Strachan. Of course, heraldic law and the process for officially recognizing a Clan Chief falls ultimately under the jurisdiction of the Court of the Lord Lyon.
